As early as 1240, Cistercian monks cultivated noble vines such as Pinot Noir and Pinot gris on Lake Neusiedl. They recognized early on the optimal conditions for these grape varieties in Burgenland and proved to be promoters of viticulture through variety purification and improved production. Like later Jewish wine merchants, they ensured the worldwide distribution and recognition of these excellent wines.
